After taking a hiatus, Gramery Cafe is back.

Here's a recent pic of Vento, taken two weeks ago....we took a lunch break while my Mac was going thru a major diagnosis at the Apple Store.

After numerous conversations with Apple's experts and a visit to the Genius Bar, neither of which could figure out why Snow Leopard disabled syncing.....I finally solved the mystery myself going on a discussion board located using Google search.

Birthdays

Central Park is beautiful this time of year, with trees in full bloom, BUT nothing compares to the beautiful arrangement of roses the Frogels surprised me with at Benji & Jake's.

The family is here upstate, celebrating another birthday with me, beginning with dinner last night at The Front Porch, along with my dear friend Janet. Jan stopped by this morning, looking great after her workout, with a Plumeria scented candle....and tonight is another celebration with Janet and Ernest at The Old Homestead.

We met Judith this afternoon, getting ready for her seasonal opening of The Fat Lady Cafe. This is an early start for Fat Lady, which usually opens Memorial Day weekend, and we're all looking forward to lunch on the deck.

The Front Porch

It was opening weekend at The Front Porch and we always look forward to Sunday brunch and Ina's famous granola (made with love), quesadillas and yummy desserts.

We were happy to see Jan, Chelsea and Chris are back, as we had our first brunch of the season with Gail and Ron.

Did I forget to mention dinner? That risotto was perfect!

Passover

I'm still playing around with my new Flip Mino, and with iMovies special effects, creating videos is easy and fun.

Here we were last weekend at Mesa Grill, where Bobby Flay's innovative cuisine keeps regulars coming back for more.

The weather took a turn last Sunday with spring-like temperatures....a great day for a Wally-walk in Stuyvesant Park.

Wednesday was the first night of Passover, and we celebrated at Knickerbocker Grill's annual Seder. The ceremony was a little too long for Elliot, whose ADD kicked in....and OUT came the Blackberry. Thank GOD we were seated in the rear, where the singing Rabbi was unable to see him checking email and returning calls.

Bobby was no better, with his ear glued to HIS cell phone, as he gobbled down dinner and cut out before dessert....Beyonce calls! We wrapped his dessert to-go, and a lucky homeless fellow was the recipient of Knickerbocker's flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce.

Thankfully, Passover comes only once a year. Religiosity is just too much for this family.

We Love Restaurants

As you can tell from the title of this post we LOVE dining out.....AND, documenting our dining experiences is a snap with our new Flip video camera. Here you can view some of our favorite haunts, where we dined last week with Janet, Jan and Don at Buona Fortuna, and with Louis at Blue Water Grill.

We spent this weekend in the city where I joined Jenn and Bryan for brunch at Vintage Irving. Unfortunately the waffle machine was broken, so I selected the coconut pancakes....and they were yummy! You won't find these items on their website, but it's one my favorite places in the area for weekend brunch.

Last night we met up with long time friends, and Syosset natives, Joanne and Eddie, for an elegant dinner at The Modern.

The Modern is actually two restaurants in one....The Bar Room offers an a la carte menu where The Dining Room's menu is prix fixe, with a choice of the tasting menu or a selection of three courses.

This afternoon Elliot and I stopped for lunch at Mesa Grill. Bobby Flay's signature cuisine never disappoints. I had my favorite dish.....Chile Relleno....and their muffin basket (with coffee) is divine.

The weekend ended with dinner at Mumbles, a local bistro, meeting up with neighbors, Gail, Ron, Jeanne and Alan.

Wild Things

It's said March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, BUT the lions were out last night at Buona Fortuna, where things got a little too wild.....so much so, that we had to diffuse this candid snap shot in order not to be flagged for inappropriate material.

Can you guess the identities of this "mystery" couple?

Meanwhile things were a little tamer at Benji and Jake's, where Elliot and I stopped by for lunch before leaving for Jeffersonville, where I met up with long-time friends, Susan, of 811Q and Kate, owner of Goode and Plenty.

And speaking of wild things, I spotted a baby cub on Behr Road on my way back from Jeff.

It just goes to show you that Mother Nature is still teasing us, with last weekend's temperature reaching 70 degrees.

Union Square was bustling with shoppers, and the trendy "Coffee Shop" reopened it's outdoor cafe with diners sporting light sweatshirts and short sleeved T's.

Meanwhile, just 100 miles north of the city, lakes are still frozen and patches of snow cover can be seen on mountain roads. This weekend I spotted two Canadian geese casually strolling on Kauneonga Lake. Though the ice fisherman are long gone, there were still some brave souls walking on the thin ice.

Our friend and resident psychologist/baker/restaurateur Judith had us in for tea at her beautiful lakefront home. We're all looking forward to her Fat Lady Cafe reopening, where she promised to reinvent the upstairs dining area, transforming it into a juice bar. With so many health fanatics in the area, it's sure to be a success.

Once again, we were glad to see that Benji and Jake are back from vacation, with their brick ovens firing up whole wheat pizzas of every variety. We met up with Rick for a quick bite before shopping at Walmart, whose prices are a third of what we are used to paying in Manhattan. I've heard that some of the locals refer to Walmart as the Bloomingdale's of Monticello.

It was a bridal extravaganza at Filene's Basement Friday morning as future brides lined up for a designer bridal gown event. Local news covered the event, and passing by Filene's on my way to work, I snapped this photo.

Meanwhile, love is in the air....it was a belated Valentine's Day for two of our dearest friends, who will remain nameless, as they 'rekindled' their friendship on this last day of February!

President's Week

It's been a tumultuous week and I'm almost glad to be going back to work and getting into my regular routine. Between doctor appointments, Valentine's Day, Elliot's birthday, and a plumbing backup in Kauneonga, work will seem like a vacation.

I did get to see Billy Elliot with Bobby and absolutely loved it. The starring role of Billy is played by three different performers....we got to see Tommy Batchelor, the understudy, but Bobby has already seen the show three times, all with Trent Kowalik.

It's another neighborhood shoot of Ugly Betty tomorrow....this time at The Bowery Hotel. AND, strolling further downtown I snapped this photo of an ally-way off Lafayette Street.

It was another day for shopping, first stopping by Blick Art Supplies for sumi-e painting materials (for me) and then onto Etiqueta Negra where Elliot bought himself a beautiful pair of leather boots. This trendy store has many high ticketed items, but there are a few reasonably priced pima cotton t-shirts, all in the twenty to thirty dollar range.

Valentine's Day Weekend

It was a cold start to the weekend, but the town of Narrowsburg was a fiery red, with Main Street decked out in hearts spellin' LOVE YA!

There wasn't an empty table to be found at Main Street Cafe when we stopped there for brunch, but after a 10 minute walk through town, we returned to find the best table in the house, set and ready for us to be seated. With so many of the local restaurants closed for the winter, the 20 mile drive through some of the most beautiful countryside, is well worth the trip. This cafe stands out as one of our favorite places to dine in the area....and if you stick around, you may spot a bald eagle soaring high above the Delaware River.

Wally is looking very fashion forward in his red knit sweater.....perfect for this Valentine's Day weekend. The sun is beginning to set later and later here, but as you can see, it still casts a long winter's shadow.

On our way back to Bethel we stopped on West Shore Road to photograph these horses, who didn't seem to mind the cold weather one bit.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this weekend was the 24th annual King of the Ice Fishing Contest. Too late now for all you fishing fanatics, but here's the post that appeared on Craig's List~

We ventured out of Manhattan today, taking the F train to Brooklyn, so Elliot could purchase eyewear at Oculus. You would think there was a shortage of eyewear stores in the city.

Located on Smith Street, this was my second trip to Carroll Gardens....home to yuppies (or are they now referred to as scuppies.....socially conscious upwardly-mobile persons?) with babies in tow and cafe after cafe. Lots of small, independent shops, and not a chain store in site. Some people swear by Brooklyn, but I couldn't wait to get back into Manhattan.

We left as fast as we came, back in the subway, with Elliot waiting at the Carroll Street station as the F train pulls into the station.

Back in the city (even though Brooklyn is 'technically' still part of 'the city') we passed by this adorable pup in the window at Wet Nose. Several months ago we stopped by to inquire about doggie daycare for Wally, only to be told that their waiting list was closed. SERIOUSLY!!!

Walking past the Union Square theater, we witnessed this yellow cab collide with a biker. Police and onlookers were already on the scene, though luckily nobody was hurt. For those out-of-towners, be forewarned, NYC taxi drivers are notorious for being reckless. My advice is take public transit.

This photo of Friend's Seminary, across from our apartment, was taken during last week's snowstorm. Today the temperature is in the mid 50's with sunny skies.

Friend's Seminary, founded by the Quakers in 1786, moved to this current location in 1860. Founded on the Quaker principles, the school accepts students of all cultural backgrounds. The b/w photo below was what the school looked like almost 150 years ago, and since then, not much has changed.

Friend's also provides shelter & hospitality every night, seven days a week, 365 days a year, for 12 homeless men & women. Located in the Common Room, the Shelter is run entirely by volunteers.

Some of you may recognize this historic school in a scene from Revolutionary Road, where Kate Winslet is walking down Rutherford Place wearing a white dress.

This is Wally and February will be the 6th year anniversary of his "birthday"..... or the day we adopted him from the Brooklyn Animal Control Shelter.

Wally loves to eat "real" food.....especially leftovers from Zagat rated restaurants. His regular diet consists of low salt turkey and cooked yams. On special occasions he'll get a Big Mac....hold the ketchup please.

Elliot reported the filming actually took place at Mr. Jones, a Yakitori restaurant and recent newcomer to the area. Yakitori means "bird on a stick" and being that I don't eat birds, you can guess I won't be dining there.

It was another bitter cold weekend upstate with temperatures dipping below zero.

As you can see, our lake is frozen solid, with ice fishermen hoping to catch (whatever) and an ice rink cleared for skaters in back of Benji and Jake's.

We made it home early on Sunday, in time to celebrate Jenn's birthday at Morimoto, with Iron Chef Morimoto behind the sushi bar.

Elliot's back on the Zone and I'm glad to say we've been staying in, eating out less and watching our favorite shows. Here's a recap:

PEACE and May The Force Be With You Mr. Obama!

Two days and counting, and as Hillary said at Wednesday night's benefit concert, "America is back after 8 years of mismanagement."

This three day weekend is already 2/3 gone, but staying in the city, doing errands, shopping and dining kept us going....even in near zero degree temperatures. We passed by the Marc Jacobs store on Bleecker Street and as always, his window display proved to be an eye opener.

It was frigid and I insisted we needed to stop for a cappuccino.....the nearest place being Sant Ambroeus on West 4th and Perry. We both agreed that this was the best cup of cap we ever had.....brewed to perfection with the creamiest foam topping (and that was with skim milk).

We had early dinner reservations at Blue Water Grill.....food is consistently good and it never disappoints.

I'm sorry to say that I missed going to a colleague's retirement party Saturday night, but hey, I heard he's already coming back to work this week on part-time status. Way to go!

Today was haircut day for me and Elliot, and we absolutely love our stylist, Mikki...he's such an artiste! After getting "coifed" we stopped at the Rubin Museum of Art Cafe for a quick lunch. Their menu is very innovative, and few know about this hidden gem on West 17th Street.

It was then on to Loehmann's, Paper Access and Paragon before heading home.....OMG, it's dinner time....off to Paul and Jimmy's before settling in to watch Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters.

It's my favorite rock star, Jon Bon Jovi....(and Elliot swears he was staring right at me) at tonight's benefit concert for Hillary Clinton.

This was a (political) star studded event, with Sheldon Silver, David Paterson, Chuck Schumer, and Chelsea, Bill and Hillary.

Bon Jovi sang 5 songs to acoustic accompaniment, and of course all the girls in the audience were screaming "We love you Jon!"

The beginning of the new year brings with it new resolutions, and one of mine was to begin an exercise regimen.....which I did this weekend at Rinaldi Pilates in the East Village.

After the workout I re-visited Liquiteria on Second Avenue and 11th Street, where I ordered the 'best-est' organic oatmeal on the planet. Customize to your liking, adding bananas, diced apples, walnuts, brown sugar, honey, raisins, cinnamon, (whole, skim, soy or rice milk) at no extra charge. Add protein for an additional dollar and you won't be hungry 'til lunchtime. It's a great spot for a quick lunch.....sandwiches, wraps, vegan soups, chili, fresh pressed miracle juices, and more.....stop by when you're in the East Village.

Happy New Year from Kauneonga Lake!

As you can see, the lake is just beginning to freeze over as the cold winds and winter temperatures prevail. In a week or two we can expect to see the ice fisherman appear; and as February rolls around, the 24th annual King of the Ice fishing tournament will bring hundreds of fishermen, driving their SUVs onto the lake, pitching tents and all vying for the largest catch and grand prize.

It's the favorite spot for locals and truckers to stop by for a homemade breakfast of bacon and eggs, blueberry pancakes, buttered toast and a hot cup of coffee....all for under two bucks. It's Blanche's Diner on Route 17B.

Spotted recently at Blanche's was a renowned doctor and his wife, as well as Janet Reno.....or was it a Janet Reno look-alike? We won't tell.

Sunday storm

The icicles were hanging from the eaves as we woke up this morning to yet another snowstorm.

We spent the morning indoors, wrapping holiday presents, and then ventured out to The Front Porch for brunch before leaving for the city.

By the time we hit the road the snow had stopped, the sun was out and the roads were plowed and sanded. Drive home....just over 2 hours.

A Snowy Weekend

We knew the forecast, but leaving the city at 3:00, neither one of us could have predicted the drive upstate would take 5 hours. The Palisades Parkway was backed up from exit 1 thru exit 7, with dozens of cars stuck in the ice and snow. Our new lean, mean, driving machine made it without a hitch.

We were lucky to find Benji and Jake's open, despite the storm, and the Chapin crowd was spotted, seated at a corner table overlooking the now-frozen lake. Short staffed, Benji doubled as bartender and waiter, while Jake worked the ovens.

The Crate and Barrel delivery of our new dining table arrived at 7:00A.M., but unfortunately, the left side was soaked with water, and the bench has a small chip, so both pieces will need to be exchanged...a bummer.

We're looking forward to relaxing this weekend, doing some last minute shopping and meeting up with friends.

New Toys

The store windows are all dressed up for the holidays, and there are bargains to be found....even at Theory, located in NYC's trendy meatpacking district. I picked up a long-sleeve t-shirt for a mere $32....a steal, considering the actual list price.

While Elliot was busy attending a Mac basics class at the 14th Street Apple Store, I was busy purchasing an Apple TV to add to our home theater system. It was a Christmas gift to myself, and WHY NOT? Elliot didn't leave empty handed either.....he picked up the 3G iPhone and Bose QuietComfort headphones.

Meeting up with Bryan, we stopped for brunch at Vento, before heading north up 8th Avenue for some more holiday shopping. Simple is beautiful at Arcadia, where we walked away with gifts for the entire family....even for "hard-to-shop-for" Bobby. There's something for everyone here, from skin care products, candles, unique children's toys, jewelry, pottery and accessories.

From there we made several stops, first at Jo Malone, then Fresh and finally at the Holiday Market at Union Square.

All this activity left us exhausted, yet not too tired for dinner at one of our favorite neighborhood Italian restaurants, Paul and Jimmy's. Another weekend gone by and just one more to go until Christmas.

Between work, holiday shopping and knitting projects, I've realized it's been ages since my last post.

We were upstate last weekend, enjoying the snow and dining at some of our favorite spots....The Front Porch, Main Street Cafe and (newly rediscovered) Frankie and Johnnie's.

Through my Google Reader subscriptions I came across Image Generator....make graphics with your uploaded photos, place your image on a poster or magazine cover, add your face to a different body or overlay famous people or cartoon characters onto your photo....try it!

I'd rather blog than cook, which is why we catered our entire Thanksgiving dinner from Whole Foods.

The herb rubbed, oven ready turkey breast was easy to roast, following Whole Foods printed instructions. Everything else, from soup to dessert, was prepared and just needed reheating.

Carving was a little tricky, and using an electric knife, half the rosemary seasoning ended up on the wall.

Next year we would like to have printed instructions for cleanup.

One more day of work and it's off to the country to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

This year the family agreed on Whole Foods, where I placed an order for oven ready turkey breast, soup, sides, bread and dessert....also added a cheese board at the last minute for early snacking.

As I mentioned to Ming, I ordered a "humane" vegetarian meal for myself. As a child, my grandmother would take me to the live-chicken market beneath the Williamsburg Bridge, where chickens were slaughtered (kosher style) and I can still remember those poor things running around without their heads. Let the rest of my family be happy devouring the poor bird....at least my conscience will be clear.

And, here's something for all you meat lovers....Dogmatic, New York's first street food sausage restaurant. Take your pick from beef, chicken, pork, turkey or lamb....and there's even asparagus for all you vegetarians. Sausages are totally organic, handcrafted and low in fat. Choice of toppings included, and don't forget to make room for dessert....sorbet or ice cream.

New York Deer Hunter Kills Toddler With Stray Bullet

A Swan Lake toddler has died and a New York City man has been charged with manslaughter in the hunting accident on a rural Sullivan County road Sunday afternoon.

The building on the left is the majestic Apthorp, located on the upper west side of Broadway, between 78th and 79th Streets. The Apthorp's been home to many well known celebrities; Al Pacino, Rosie O'Donnell, Cyndi Lauper, Conan O'Brian and Nora Ephron, to name a few.

Erected at the turn of the 20th century by the Astor family, the building is famous for it's vaulted 3-story high Renaissance entrance and expansive courtyard. This past summer, the Apthorp's conversion of rental units to condo had prices going as high as $3,000 per square foot. Fortunately, 88 tenants were able to remain in their rent stabilized apartments, but for those earning more than $250,000, New York's "luxury decontrol" law forced them to pay "market rate" rents...thus resulting in some renters paying more than 10 times as much as their low income neighbor.

As I was walking down Broadway Friday, I shot these photos of yet another New York filming location. I don't think this was another Ugly Betty episode, because I noticed two black SUVs parked in the arched entry, both with California government plates. The production was called King's, so it could be an upcoming movie or TV series.

I love New York, especially during the holidays. It's also a time when the stores are flooded with newly released CD's and DVD's. They're great for gift giving as more and more of us are spending time in our living rooms, with home theater systems and widescreen TV's. I can't even remember the last time we went to the movies.

You can change yesterday, when overnight, the world became a better place, after Tuesday's landslide victory for Barack Obama. Every New Yorker, (even my diehard, right wing colleague, Mr. O) had a smile on his face.

Feeling very American, and helping to save the auto industry, we headed downtown, (where I shot this photo of the Stock Exchange), to sign a lease on a new car.

With the election over, we needed a stress-less weekend away, which is just what we planned, as we left town early Friday to meet up with Rick at Yiasou Cafe for dinner and drinks.

The dreary weather didn't keep us from shopping, where we stopped by Willow and Brown, and Wally enjoyed playing with shop owner Carolin's cute puppy, Abigail.

As you can see, Willow and Brown has the most magnificent display of dinnerware, pottery, kitchen accessories, home furnishings, and new to the store, a beautiful collection of women's sweaters, tee's and blouses.

Last night it was dinner at the Smith's home, where Ginger served the "perfect" wild salmon and guests brought wine, bread, and the most decadent bread pudding.

After passing the long lines on Third Avenue this morning, and receiving Todd's text message at 6:00AM, warning me about the 200 plus lined up at his voting site, I was glad to have voted at 3:30, where I waited less than 10 minutes.

The poor guy in front of me was irate when his name did not appear on the voter's register. It seems to me that with all the advances in modern technology, our voting machines still remain so antiquated.

Nevertheless, I was more than happy to cast my votes for the column on the left and pull that red lever!

Halloween on the Lake

Had a blast with Judi at her Halloween party in her beautiful home on Kauneonga Lake. There was no trickery, but there were lots of treats, as partygoers brought food and wine, providing an eclectic menu, from guacamole to carved turkey to Greek specialities to sushi.

Judi was holy-er than thou with her long braided payes, while other guests included Salvador Dali, Che Guevara, with a mix of cross-dressers and wigged out celebrities.

Saturday's rain kept us in the city this weekend, but the unseasonably warm temperature had us out and about, umbrellas in tow.

It isn't even Halloween, but ABC Carpet and Home is already set up for Christmas, with snowflakes and icicles adorning chandeliers and store shelves.

One of our favorite comedy series, Ugly Betty, will be filming in our 'hood Tuesday, where these shocking pink (a la Betty style) No Parking signs are plastered along Park Avenue South and 18th Street. I'll be sure to stop by after work tomorrow hoping to get a shot of America Ferrera or Michael Urie.

Rick's always game for a day of shopping and eating and that's just what we did yesterday when he came into town.

Elliot couldn't take the day off, but I was able to, even squeezing in a doctor's appointment at Dr. Goldman, where Rick witnessed the Fraxel treatment.

We started the morning off at Filene's Basement, where Rick picked up Christmas presents (for himself) which his mother will wrap and place under the tree. From there is was off to Container Store, West Elm, Door Store, Housing Works, Jensen Lewis, Mxyplyzyk and Loehmann's.

Stopped for lunch at Smorgas Chef in the West Village, then walked down West 4th Street to Charles, where I pointed out SJP's townhouse and Jenn's two apartments.

Turned onto Bleecker where Rick tried on new frames (and a new, edgy look) at Robert Marc.

From there we took a look at Bryan's closet.... I mean apartment, before stopping at the Apple Store.

We then took the subway to lower Manhattan where I had my third laser treatment. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WITH LOW PAIN TOLERANCE.

Back on the subway to Union Square, where we met up with Elliot at our apartment for drinks before our 6:30 reservation at Tamarind. Tamarind (pictured above) is, in my opinion, the BEST Indian restaurant in Manhattan.

It was a full day and I was totally exhausted.... but it WAS fun!!!

Andy Warhol said art is what you can get away with and these days almost anything can be called art.

Here's my collection of art on the wall above my desk. I love photographs and if you click on the image to enlarge you will see a photo of me and Ming the Merciless taken by Elliot at Le Pain Quotidien. As we all know, Ming is a man of many disguises, which is why his face is hidden behind a napkin.

The series of Mick Jagger, above the Abbey Road sign, was taken directly from the screen at a showing of Shine A Light at Sony IMAX.....and colleague and artiste extraordinaire AJ Wagenhals gave me the pop art painting on the right.

Today I shot these photos at the Times Square/42nd Street station. The tiled walls are adorned with images of characters and posing for dollars is one of many living statues you'll find in our subway stations. If you drop a coin in their bucket they come to life, and may twirl or bow in appreciation.

I was double parked on Charles Street yesterday, dropping off stuff at Jenn's (who happens to live across the street from Sarah Jessica Parker) when I spotted SJP and her adorable son walking their cute pup.

This is NOT my photo, though it may have been taken yesterday, as she was wearing the same sweater, shades and do.

Sex and the City bus tours regularly stop on Bleecker Street, where fans of the show visit Magnolia Bakery and snap photos of the stoop on Perry Street, home to Sarah's character, Carrie Bradshaw. Those in the know, know that SJP actually lives just around the corner.

We finally made it to the Museum at Bethel Woods to relive our favorite era, the 60's. I loved my high school days and this visit brought it all back to me.

The museum is as breathtaking as the spectacular views from the mountaintop where hippies (were we really called that?) once grooved to the music of Santana's Soul Sacrifice while chowing down on organic brown rice, courtesy of the Hog Farmers. How do I know this? I was there!!!

The highlight of today's visit was sharing my experience with none other than the organizer and promoter of Woodstock, my hero, Michael Lang (pictured, center). YES..... I thought I noticed him while reliving "three days of peace and music" in The Festival Experience, one of the museum's multimedia theaters. It was after speaking to the museum's director, who confirmed that it was Michael, when he actually joined us.... I missed a photo op, after the director thought it might be intrusive, so all I got was a shot of Elliot and me outside the museum's entrance.

Went to last night's Madonna concert at the Garden and this is the best of the worst photos taken with my iPhone camera. Tickets said "no cameras allowed" so I left mine behind.

Nevertheless, it was a great show, though I can't say the same for our section 127 seats, which at $200 apiece, paled next to Rick and Jill (pictured), who shelled out $900 each for theirs, first row above floor level.

Kelly Ripa was spotted, first row, center floor, as Madonna handed her the mike for an audience sing along.

The MATERIAL GIRL dazzled concertgoers, screaming "Sarah Palin can't come to my party! Sarah Palin can't come to my show!"

It was a tumultuous week for the market, and given the state of the economy, the only thing to smile about was the beautiful fall foliage on this peak autumn weekend. This photo was taken yesterday on Hurd Road, and it reminds me of the Hudson River School paintings.

We took Wally with us as we visited our friend Ron in his new upstate home, and then stopped by Goode and Plenty in Jeffersonville, where Kate showed us her latest collection of Velvet, Eileen Fisher and Keen boots. Wally enjoyed sharing a muffin with us at Samba, where he shared the bay window with pumpkins and gourds.

Earlier in the day we dropped by Benji and Jake's, sitting on the deck, overlooking beautiful Kauneonga Lake, on this Indian summer day.

Benji and Jake are all ready for their big Halloween bash, with skeletons, witches, spiderwebs and ghosts adorning the restaurant's walls and stairway. Dare to enter at your own risk.

The day ended with a BBQ dinner at Rick's, where Judi demonstrated her culinary skills, preparing butternut squash soup, a wilted salad and pear pastry. Rick's lemon salmon and asparagus was yummy.

It was unseasonably warm today, as the Jewish community celebrated Yom Kippur, our Day of Atonement. Not ones to fast, Elliot, Bryan and I enjoyed the day off with lunch alfresco at Smorgas Chef, on the corner where West 4th and West 12th intersect.

We love their coldwater shrimp salad, and this was all that remained when I decided to photograph the leftovers. A little out of focus, I diffused and added dry brush to create this effect.

Moving on, we walked down Bleecker Street, where despite the fasting holiday, Magnolia Bakery's lines spilled out onto the sidewalk.

Marc Jacobs loves hats and the mannequins in this cool window display are all voting for THAT ONE.

Tuesday, I attended a DOE Software Expo at the majestic Brooklyn Museum.

Although I've been a New Yorker my entire life, this was my first visit to Brooklyn's historic Beaux-Arts landmark.

Closed to the public on Tuesdays, attendees had the opportunity to view the museum's collections while enjoying the complimentary breakfast, sponsored by the New York City Department of Education.

We were given demonstrations of the latest education software, and vendors set up terminals for hands-on playtime.

A great day for getting out of the "office" and networking with other techies.

Autumn leaves

It was a BEAUTIFUL fall weekend upstate, with the leaves beginning to turn shades or red and orange. I predict trees will be at their peak within the next week or two.

It was too cool to eat outdoors at Benji and Jake's, so we stayed inside and were still able to enjoy the spectacular lakeside views. Temperatures started off in the high 30's and by midday rose to the 60's.

We finally made it over to Janet's home.... or shall I say "estate" located on rolling hills and woodlands stretching as far as the eye can see. We spotted a family of deer while enjoying fine wine and sushi by candlelight.

Sunday was perfect weather for the Cajun Harvest Fest, but by the time we arrived, all the gumbo, jambalaya and crawfish were gone. There were still plenty of pumpkins, fall mums, cheeses, breads and crafts to choose from.

Two days off and it flashed by like lightening. I can honestly say that I didn't do much of anything, and looking back, I wish I had planned some activities ahead of time.

Elliot took the day off yesterday and we went to The Grey Dog's Coffee for lunch before stopping at Whole Foods for essentials and Filene's Basement for another black sweater to add to my collection.

Dinner was at our neighborhood favorite, Paul and Jimmy's, before heading home to watch House and Fringe.

Stayed in the entire day, catching up on DVR recordings and emails. It will be sushi tonight at Yama (sorry, no website) and then staying in to watch the season premier of Private Practice.

Gearing myself up for tomorrow's Biden/Palin debate. As Todd would say.... whoo hoo

economics and traditions

It's the start of the Jewish New Year, and the traditional greeting L'shanah tovah literally translates into for a good year, which is just what we need after yesterday's market close.

I saw this sticker plastered on a parking meter on Stanton Street, and thought it was an appropriate message for the day.

As traditions go, our family's attempt at celebrating Rosh Hashanah has morphed from gefilte fish and matzoh ball soup at our parents home into a tapas foodfest at the ever so popular Stanton Social Club. Tapas are small servings, and prices are generally less than larger-sized entrees. With over 40 shareable delicacies to choose from, I went for the fish, Elliot and Bobby went for the meat, and the kids opted for chicken and pizzettas.

Traditionally, small plates should translate into small prices, but be forewarned, while you're busy socializing at Stanton, the tab can add up, with prices averaging from $9 to $20 for each dish. As Bobby commented "I felt like I just ate a bunch of appetizers".... as he stopped for ice cream on the walk home.

The economy may have hit an all time low, but judging from the full house at Stanton, you would never know it.

It was a rainy, humid weekend and with Elliot's late departure from the office on Friday, we decided to remain in the city. Besides, Friday was debate night, and it's no surprise who the winner turned out to be.

Marc Jacobs certainly knows a winner when he sees one.... just check out his store window on Bleecker and Perry. He's always got the most innovative displays, and the same goes for his sense of style.

Saturday took us to the Meatpacking District, where I made a quick stop at the Apple Store before an early afternoon brunch at Vento. We're been going to Vento ever since my first time there (which was for Ernest's 50th birthday) and this photo is very atypical, as the place is usually filled to capacity. My guess is the rains kept people away.... which was fine with us since we had no reservations.

A walking tour was spotted at the corner of Waverly and Seventh Avenue. New York City offers at least a dozen weekend walking tours, some free and others for a nominal fee. I don't know if one needs special credentials to lead a tour, but from what I've seen, my guess it DEFINITELY NOT.

On the east corner is Harry Chong, one of the oldest laundrys in Manhattan. Last I heard they closed their doors due to escalating rents but from the opposite corner it appeared that the lights were on.

I've been wanting to try August forever, and today we finally made it there for Sunday brunch. Jenn, who lives around the corner on Charles Street, even stopped by to say hello. The place is warm, friendly with good service and great coffee! It's no wonder the crowds keep coming back.

It's simple to recognize Elliot, even from the back, if there's a glass of chardonnay in his hand.

It was a perfect ending to a perfect day at the most perfect venue.... The New Museum at the Bowery. The symposium, presented by marketing guru Martin Lindstrom, was followed by a cocktail reception on the outdoor terraces and rooftop, recreated as a "garage" by Brandimage, as a brand development tool.... a new way to investigate brands, activate energy and insight and unlock their potential. What better way to close the chapter on the Bush administration than with this hilarious takeoff of the children's classic, Goodnight Moon.

I haven't read the book, but you can see a preview and even signup on it's Facebook page, on the Goodnight Bush website.

Another Weekend in Paradise

It's been three weeks away from our upstate home in Kauneonga Lake, as other commitments kept us in the city these past two weekends. However, we finally made it up here late Friday, but not too late for dinner at Ina and Allen's Front Porch. We heard Ina had a fall, tripping on Casey's bone, breaking a rib.... YIKES!!! We wish her a speedy recovery.

The weather this weekend was FABULOUS, and dining at Benji and Jake's upstairs on the lake afforded us this spectacular view. Fall has finally arrived and we can see that boaters are slowly but surely clearing their docks, as there was hardly a boat to be seen in the water this weekend.

The Black Lake and Oxford crowd had their annual dinner at The Front Porch last night..... I'm sure it was a blast and will have to report on that later..... as we met up with Rick and company at Main Street Cafe in Narrowsburg.

Regressing, the workweek was uneventful, as the conventions and US Open came to a close. We managed to meet up with the kids at Paul and Jimmy's Thursday, as well as a late night dinner at Japonais on Wednesday.

The new fall lineup has already begun with the season openers of Prison Break and House. Looking forward to Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, this week.

Law and Order was busy filming on Broadway and 81st, with their cameras and trailers parked along the busy street all week. The dressing rooms are aptly named Lucy and Desi rather than revealing the true names of the stars.... as if we didn't already know.

Finally, had to post this photo sent to me by Thea, all the way from Australia, taken at an anti-Palin rally in Alaska. Even the state troopers are rallying against the Lipsticked Pit Bull. For more photos be sure to check out The Palinator.

It's been a whirlwind weekend, beginning with Friday's rain and ending with Sunday's heat and humidity.

We remained in the city in order to have our dishwasher repaired, and meet up with bloggers at Le Pain Quotidien.

Friday night we tried Hea, a new Japanese restaurant which opened this week on the corner of 13th and Third Avenue. Food and views were above average, but the kitchen had it's moments....though our waitress was very attentive and very apologetic.

Saturday it was brunch at The House and dinner at our favorite Mediterranean, Kellari's Parea.

Took this photo of Rothman's window with the reflection of Union Square's W Hotel in the background. Looks like Rothman's could be non-partisan, though I did see an Obama t-shirt on display, but not-a-one for McCain (or that she-devil Palin).

To sum up the weekend, all I can say was after watching SNL, I am TOTALLY obsessed with my anti-Palin campaign.

This is what I felt like this morning after missing my 6:00 A.M. caffeine fix.

Due to a jammed dishwasher door, with my coffee pot and grinding accessories trapped inside the machine, I was unable to brew my usual morning pot. I had to resort to a cup of ground decaf using my one-cup drip coffee maker. I suffered with an annoying headache all day, and even that awful Starbucks, which Elliot picked up for me at 7:00 A.M., didn't help.

G.E. repairman scheduled for early Saturday morning. In the interim, tonight we purchased two black coffees to go from Irving Farm, which I'll microwave in the morning.

This is kitty.

We're cat sitting for Bryan while he's on a weeklong business trip in Lexington, Kentucky.

We did some damage control before her visit by covering the couch and removing breakable items from tables. It's been four days and so far, so good.

I replaced the smelly litterbox with disposable cardboard ones and picked up Yesterday's News kitty litter. Also got some litterbox liners to make cleanup easier. Simple.

Kitty is returning to Horatio Street tomorrow, but I think she enjoyed her stay, AND Wally's company.

Last week I spotted a man standing in the middle of the island at Broadway and West 79th Street holding a sign reading LennonMurderTruth.

Monday I spotted this van on 7th Avenue at 15th Street, filled with what appeared to be audio and video equipment.

I admired John Lennon, the man and his music, so I checked out the website to see for myself the so called "truth" behind the murder of John Lennon. Now, I've heard several conspiracy theories, but this one is a little too "out there" even for a skeptic like me.

Save The Planet...It's The Only One With Beer!

Could this be true? We passed by The Watering Hole yesterday on our way to Le Pain Quotidien when this sign caught my eye. I'm not a beer drinker, but I do agree that we need to do something about saving the planet.

The weekend started off on a sad note Friday, when we got word that a very close friend of Bryan's suddenly passed away. This news came as a shock to all of us, as the untimely death of this beautiful and bright young girl makes one realize how precious life can be. Our condolences to her family.

We had met up with Jenn for dinner at Paul and Jimmy's later that night. Jenn has been working non-stop on event planning and marketing proposals in her new position and a quiet dinner with wine was just what the doctor ordered.

Saturday night we drove out to Long Island to meet up with friends Joanne and Eddie, along with Chad and Mike for a wonderful dinner at Toku at Americana Manhasset. Toku is located on Long Island's Miracle Mile in the space formally occupied by Millie's Restaurant.

This morning I got up early to pick up Bryan's cat Chloe, a/k/a/ Kitty, who I will be watching while Bryan is in Lexington, Kentucky on business. So far, Chloe and Wally seem to be getting along, and I hope it stays that way, because Chloe has some pretty sharp claws.

Early afternoon I accompanied Elliot to Anthony Gianzero Salon for his monthly haircut, before heading off to Chelsea Market for some cooking supplies at Bowery Kitchen. It was on the corner of West 16th and Ninth Avenue, where I reached for my iphone to answer a call from Bryan when his image appeared, completely frozen on the screen. Luckily we were a block away from the Apple Store, where they were able to reset the phone without losing any of my stuff.... whew!!!

From there, we crossed the street where we were able to score an outdoor table at Vento. It was a gorgeous afternoon, especially compared to yesterday's rainstorm, and we love dining outdoors on days like today.

Elliot was in the mood for eggs and I had my usual yogurt, granola and fruit. There were the usual "model types" and foreign tourists at this popular corner restaurant, located on the triangle at Ninth, Hudson and 14th Streets.

After several cups of coffee we walked down Hudson, where I shot this photo of us reflected in the store window of Catherine Malandrino.
Her clothing line is quite pricey, but if you check on the sales on the shopping website you may find something to your liking

Further down Hudson we made a pitstop at Beasty Feast to select a new harness for Wally and litter for Kitty. I also found that they stocked disposable litter boxes, which are much more suitable for our small apartment.... and I don't have to wash them out either.... I can simply throw them away after a day's use.

Strolling along, we stopped by Robert Marc eyewear for an adjustment, where across Bleecker Street I shot this photo of one of the many Marc Jacobs stores window display. Glad to see this top designer is a Democrat.... who would have thought otherwise.

US Open

As promised, here are those photos from last night's US Open. We arrived at 7:00, early enough to grab a bit to eat, due to the afternoon matches running overtime.

We headed past the Louis Armstrong Stadium and on over to the food courts. Finding an empty table was a feat, as commuters arriving from the city all had the same idea. With so many choices, we decided on New Deli Spice for some Indian Food.

I ordered the $8.50 Vegetarian Wrap, but all I got was some warm, soggy lettuce on a overly-microwaved wrap. I washed it down with my $4.75 Evian water. Also had a $12 glass of (bad) chardonnay in a plastic cup at the Grey Goose Bar. Unfortunately, it wasn't until after we had eaten at the food court that we noticed the Patio Cafe and Mojito Restaurant, with what appeared to be some decent menu choices.

As you'll see below, we did not have the best seats in the house. Lucky for us, we had a bird's eye view of the jumbotron screens. Here is Venus!

So here's our view. Some people call this the "nose bleed' section. I did have a great view of a bald head and the curly gray haired man sitting in front of me.

Cameras were everywhere, and these fans caught a glimpse of themselves on the big screen.

These fans did not, but see the funny earpieces these guys are wearing? They are working radios and a promotional giveaway from American Express, (if you presented them with your card). I brought one home and gave mine to Mr. T.

There were those big screens everywhere, so if you chose to remain on the grounds and do some shopping, you were still able to view the game.

Unfortunately, due to the late hour, and an early wake-up, we were forced to leave after the first set. I felt better after giving our tickets to two desperate teenage girls, waiting at the gate hoping to get inside to see their hero, Rafael Nadal. Catching up on a week's worth of blogging.

Sunny skies and warm temps were the perfect combination for this season's opening of Bethel Woods Harvest Market. Week one featured a wine tasting area and this week's theme was the alpaca festival. Both children and adults enjoyed petting these goats... though I'm not so sure the goats enjoyed it as much.

Returning to the city we reacquainted ourselves with Watson the parrot at Paul and Jimmy's sidewalk cafe. Charlie, Watson's owner, reported Watson missing a while back.... but lucky for Charlie (and Watson) the plucky parrot was found hiding in a dresser drawer.

Thursday, Mr. O invited me to join him for drinks at The Harvard Club. It was crimson, crimson, crimson at this elegant and old world Georgian style red brick building. Libraries, reading rooms, full service gym, racquet and handball courts, bars, dining rooms, meeting rooms and hotel rooms are available to all it's members.

Back in Bethel, stop by the Bethel Woods Museum's store and walk away with a Love, Peace, Splat fly swatter.

Yay for love, yay for peace, nay for splat. We all love memorabilia, but I'll take a t-shirt, please.

Greek food and African dance

After a day of meetings on Thursday, Elliot felt the need to unwind, and what better place than our favorite NYC Greek restaurant, Kellari's Parea.

In our opinion, Kellari serves the best fish in town. I love their Sesame Crusted Sushi Grade Tuna with Roasted Beets while Elliot favors the Lavraki, a Whole Grilled Mediterranean Sea Bass with Steamed Wild Greens.

Here we are at our favorite corner table, with tall open-air windows, facing 20th Street.

Friday we were able to leave the city early enough to arrive upstate in time for dinner with Rick, Ron and Don at The Front Porch. Timing is everything, and as luck would have it, the restaurant had just emptied out as concertgoers were leaving to see the Boston Pops perform at nearby Bethel Woods.

It was Greek food again on Saturday, when we met up with the Steinbergs and Ginger at our other favorite Mediterranean restaurant, Cafe Yiasou, in Liberty, NY. We've been dining here for years and owner/chef George is always on hand, serving freshly grilled fish and traditional Greek dishes.

After dinner we drove to Livingston Manor's Catskill Art Society for an African dance and music performance by Kofi Donkor’s Ghanaian ensemble, Sankofa. I enjoyed it, but by intermission, Elliot had had his share of drumming. However, he did seem to enjoy it for a while, as evidenced by this photo I took of him clapping his hands to the beat of the drums.

INDOOR GRILLING

This is perfect for those apartment dwellers who do not have the luxury of an outdoor space.

Today, three NYC bloggers had a meetup at Le Pain Quotidien in ABC Carpet.

Todd of Hell's Kitchen and I met with mystery blogger (photoshopped to protect his secret identity) Ming the Merciless for what I planned to be a low calorie lunch.

It was calorie sticker shock for me, when Le Pain's menu, in compliance with a recent NYC law requiring chain restaurants to post calorie count in the same size font as the price, revealed the truth about my favorite "low-cal" yogurt granola parfait....a whopping 490 calories.....SHOCKING!!! I immediately changed my order to a more slenderizing 390 calorie Ricotta and Mission Fig Tartine. NOTE: Extra calories not responsible for puffy face which is still healing from heat intensive laser treatment.

AND just in case you were curious about the identity of that cutie by my side....it's none other than professional actor Jesse May....here in a Pepsi commercial.

I was seeing red this weekend when my relatively new iPhone's camera began to malfunction.

So, I logged onto Apple's website and was able to get an early morning appointment at the Fifth Avenue store.... the 14th Street Genius Bar was TOTALLY booked thru Thursday.

As I predicted, the camera was broken, but luckily, the phone was under warranty and Apple gave me a brand new one. Thankfully, I had all my information backed up on my computer which I was able to easily re-sync.

I took these photos yesterday (just to test out the new phone's camera) at the Apple Store's plaza on Fifth Avenue. You can see the stately Plaza Hotel reflected on the glass of Apple's entryway.

Later in the day I visited my trusty dermatologist, Dr. Barry Goldman, for a facial laser treatment in order to clear up imperfections and sun damage. The Fraxel procedure was not painless.... it felt like (hot) bee stings... but I was able to take it without any topical anesthetic. Leaving the office my face looked like this picture.... and felt like I had a bad sunburn. Please pass the SPF 40.

kauneonga: weekend update

It's been a glorious four days here in Kauneonga Lake. Sunny skies and cool temps prevailed....and we even managed to avoid those torrential storms that plagued NYC and Long Island last Thursday.

Saturday we decided to try the newly opened The Lazy Beagle in Livingston Manor. The Foster brothers, of Peez Leweez fame, seem to have another winner on their hands.

Disappointed they closed Resort, we were elated to hear that Sims and Ryan were opening yet another restaurant, conveniently located right next door to Peez. Offering everything from pizza and burgers to full entrees, complete with salad and veggies, there is something for everyone at TLB.

Call him Chef on the Move, it was no secret that Marty, former chef of The Front Porch suddenly and unexpectedly relocated his pots, pans and a few recipes from the Porch to the Beagle....I thought that Sesame Crusted Salmon tasted familiar. Not to worry, Ina managed to recruit the caterer for Bethel Woods, who is being groomed as the Porch's new chef while assisting Ina and Todd in the kitchen. All's well that ends well!!!

Meanwhile, with Don's directions, we got totally off-track, driving miles out of our way, looking for a statue of The Virgin Mary, which was supposed to be our landmark (to turn left) in search of Monticello's ELITE Motor Club. Once we hit Forestburgh, we did a u-turn into the parking lot of a country store, where a local set us straight. Who knew that pint-sized statue (I was looking for something the likes of Christ the Redeemer) was invisible from Route 42, hidden behind the tall trees of a private driveway. OY!!!

Finally made it over to the Motor Club, where behind it's steel gates, tours are by reservation only. Word from Janet is that Jerry Seinfeld has joined this members only, luxury resort. Maybe you too can be one of the select 500...with an initiation fee of $125,000, and a yearly fee of $7,500....apply here.

After leaving the mountains last Sunday we made last minute plans to meet up with Bryan at one of our favorite new discoveries, Dell'Anima, in the West Village at Jane and Eighth Avenue. Pick your poison at this intimate Italian, where you can customize your bruschettas, select from a variety of innovative pastas or just drop by during their apertivo hour (4:00-6:00) for wine and free snacks. This photo was taken from our table, looking out onto Jane Street. If you notice, Bryan is showing me a photo on his iPhone (lower left hand corner) while I shot this photo with my iPhone.

Tuesday we were invited for cocktails at Cacharel's showroom to preview their new spring and cruise wear collection. We left Union Square at 6:00, where the sun was shining and New Yorkers were enjoying the seasonably warm, but not too humid, weather. Arriving at the 42nd Street station, not 10 minutes later, we were unprepared for this unexpected rainstorm, which took about 20 minutes to pass us by. I took about a dozen photos of subway riders descending the 40th Street stairwell.... and it seemed that most of them were prepared, as they were all carrying umbrellas.

Fashion buyers, photographers and models were on hand at Cacharel's West 39th Street New York showroom. Next to these tall, rail-thin ladies I appeared short and overweight. If you look closely at the photo, you can see their height, as their heads almost touch the top of the doorway. Of course they were all wearing what seemed to be 6 inch heels, on top of their already 5'11" frames.

Wednesday was the last day of summer school, so Thursday morning we got up early and headed back upstate for five, hopefully glorious, days of sun and fun. We met up with Rick for salad and pizza at Benji and Jake's, before driving over to Jeffersonville, where we made several purchases at our favorite shop, Goode and Plenty.

Unfortunately, we were unable to snag tickets to last night's Jonas Brothers concert at Bethel Woods. BUT.... we did have fun getting together at our place for a BBQ and drinks with the Steinbergs, Janet and Rick. THOUGH, poor Rick had to work the operating room early this morning.... yet he had promised to guide two carloads of nurses and their teenage daughters through the backroads of Bethel last night in order to avoid traffic on 17B. Last we heard, from 8:30 text messages, the concert hadn't even started. Hopefully, Rick got a few hours of shuteye before driving back to Newburgh with the Jonas fans trailing behind him. WILL HAVE TO UPDATE YOU ON THIS WHEN WHEN RICK REPORTS BACK TO US.

We were at a BBQ at Rick's yesterday, when suddenly a dark cloud appeared and we were hit with a short rainstorm, lasting 10 minutes. When the storm cloud passed, the temperature rose and there appeared this beautiful rainbow. If you enlarge either photo by clicking on it, you can see a second rainbow off in the distance.... and coincidentally, they match his rainbow umbrella.

Small towns take their parades VERY seriously.... and so it was that we were held captive in Livingston Manor, unable to move our car or leave town for 2 hours, until the final marching band made their way down Main Street, USA.

I know fellow blogger Ming the Merciless was waiting all week to get a peek at the firemen.... so this is for you Ming (and I hope these photos don't disappoint). You see, most of the upstate fire departments rely on volunteers.... and judging from this parade, there doesn't seem to be any age requirement.

Maybe one of you bloggers can help demystify why our upstate firefighters look more like senior citizens than the Village People?

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Leon Smith, Judith Maidenbaum (a/k/a The Fat Lady), the Bethel Local Development Corporation and Bethel First, the beautification and revitalization of Kauneonga Lake has transformed our town into a thriving and prosperous community.

Residents of Bethel were ecstatic when Jane Axamethy opened The Bake House, on Route 55 in Kauneonga Lake. Longing for a bakery to call our own, where residents and visitors can stop by for homemade pies, muffins, croissants and cookies, The Bake House was a much needed and welcome addition to our community. On weekend mornings, early morning risers can be seen lining up outside Jane's artisan bakery to sample her freshly baked breads and pastries with a cup of hot coffee.

Unfortunately, reliable sources now tell me that Jane and our beloved Bake House has been given a disposess notice, effective August 31, by her landlord, owner and operator of The Boat Club. This disturbing news has many of Bethel's permanent and non-resident homeowners in a state of disbelief.

Please help by spreading the word and consider urging the owners of The Boat Club to reconsider their position.

We had a surprise celebrity guest this weekend, as Ari Gold, recording artist extraordinaire, along with renowned dance music promotor, Bobby Shaw (a/k/a my brother) joined us for drinks and dinner Saturday, at our weekend getaway in upstate New York.

Rick and the Steinbergs were along for the fun at Buona Fortuna, where Ari filled us in on his life story. SERIOUSLY, it is truly amazing how this kind and truly genuine Jewish boy from the Bronx, raised in an orthodox household, evolved into a pop icon.

You can read all about Ari's life on his website, but here are some little known facts you may not know about this Golden boy.....

Ari likes to drink (in succession) beer, wine and coffee. He loves seafood... especially lobster and soft shell crab. AND, if you're ever lucky enough to dine with him, don't be surprised if he asks to sample whatever may be on your plate.

It was the annual Riverfest in Narrowsburg, NY, located at the Upper Delaware River Valley.

Hosted by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Riverfest brings together local, and not so local, artists, craftspeople and environmentalists, annually, the last weekend in July.

Folks from the Eagle Institute were on hand to give us a bird's eye view of this eagle perched in the trees, high above the river.

I took this photo with my iPhone, looking through the telescope's lens. The cropped image is from the original, where you can spot the eagle to the right of the tree, in the mid-lower right hand corner.

Finally got rid of the land line and signed up for Time Warner's digital phone service.

The All-in-One Triple Play at $119.95 includes the DTV package, with access to more than 350 channels, over 25 FREE On Demand channels, High Speed Online, and Home Phone, with unlimited calling throughout the U.S. and Canada, and all those extras....Call Waiting, Caller ID, Call Waiting, etc....and I can still keep my 212 phone number. Not ready to give up my home phone altogether, though our kids gave up theirs in favor of cell ONLY years ago.

CSNY:Deja Vu

When I attended CSNY's 2006 Freedom of Speech tour at Bethel Woods, little did I know it would be made into a documentary.

Well, Deju Vu is here and playing at NYC's Angelika Film Center.

From Neil Young's NY Times:

The tour featured music from Young's controversial "Living With War" CD--an album of protest songs written as a rebuke of President George W. Bush and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Songs from the controversial album are woven together on the new film with archival material, news footage, audience reactions and observations of the issues surrounding the integration of politics and art, according to a statement.
A distribution deal is in the works that will make the film available on the big screen simultaneously with a video-on-demand release. In addition, Netflix will air the film on the "Watch Instantly" streaming service the same day. The band's label is expected to release a DVD version in the fall--prior to the presidential elections. HDNet is expected to air the film the day the DVD is released.

Last week, Ming the Merciless posted a photo of the Ciao Bello Gelato Truck.

I was reminded of this when I passed the Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream Truck parked in front of Trader Joe's last week. Where Ciao Bello's truck is the color of raspberry sorbet, Van Leeuwan's is more like French vanilla.

Everyone loves ice cream on those hot summer days, and Van Leeuwen claims theirs is made with "fresh hormone free milk and cream, from local farms, cane sugar and eggs."

Went to a wonderful neighborhood Greek restaurant
this Sunday.

Kellari's Parea features traditional Greek fare in a rustic yet elegant setting. The menu offers a selection of whole grilled fish, lamb and baked cheeses.

We loved the breads and trio of olives, olive oil and hard cheese.

We shared the Greek salad as an appetizer, and for entrees we chose Whole grilled Mediterranean sea bass with steamed wild greens and Sesame crusted sushi grade tuna with roasted beets. Dessert was shared... sheep’s milk yogurt with Greek thyme honey and toasted walnuts.

walmart weekends

It was a glorious weekend at Kauneonga Lake.

Friday we arrived in time to meet our friend Gail for dinner at The Front Porch, this time WITH reservations.

Saturday, we took an early morning ride to Jeffersonville, before meeting up with Rick at Benji and Jake's, our favorite spot for brick oven pizza.

Saturday night it was dinner at the Steinbergs, with friends Hal and Kay.

Sunday morning we picked up Kay, Rick and Arnie before heading on over to Callicoon's farmer's market; and then it was brunch at The Boat Club.

As usual, we made our weekend trek to Walmart, and as usual, Elliot forgot to bring his cellphone.

As a rule, when shopping, we split up and agree to meet at a certain time and place.

Being that we needed just a few essentials, we agreed to meet in 15 minutes at the front of the store.

Fifteen minutes came and went.... I waited and waited, but there was no sign of Elliot.... and without a cellphone, I had no way of contacting him.

It was at least 20 minutes beyond the 15 minute meet-up time, and figuring by this time he must be waiting by the car, I left the store for the parking lot.

I got to the car, and there was still no sign of Elliot... so I loaded up the bundles and drove to the store's entrance, where I sat and waited some more.

It was at this point that I began noticing a trend.

Taking out my cellphone, I began taking pictures of the Walmart shoppers.

I was craving sushi last night, so I coaxed Elliot (it really didn't take much coaxing) to take me to Blue Water Grill. Without reservations, we were informed the wait would be anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.

....moving on we walked to 20th Street, and decided to try Mizu Sushi. Gregg Azzollini, executive chef of Paul and Jimmy's had recommended Mizu as the best sushi restaurant in the neighborhood....and he was right on the money.

Without a website, the best thing I can do is refer you to Menu Pages to view Mizu's extensive menu of more than 50 varieties of sushi, sashimi and maki rolls. Everything was wonderful, and judging from the crowd and online reviews, we're going to be "new" regulars at this sushi hotspot.

brunch, a jersey wedding, shoe sale and movie

After two concerts, back to back, we headed to the city Sunday morning for an early brunch at a neighborhood favorite, The House. Chosen by Citysearch as The Most Romantic Dining 2007, they call it "Gramercy's charms captured in a jewel box of a restaurant."

Late afternoon we drove to Rockleigh, New Jersey (this time, without getting lost) for Allison's and Rami's wedding. The Rockleigh Country Club was the perfect venue for this more than perfect wedding. Rami's mom, Thea, and I are childhood friends, and we were lucky to reconnect after many years, even with Thea living halfway around the world, in Australia.

Walking home from work today I passed the Metropolitan Pavillion, where girls were lined up 18th Street for the Jimmy Choo sample sale. This event locale hosts numerous sample sales throughout the year.... only in New York can you find a pair of designer shoes for less than wholesale prices.... if you're lucky to find your size.

Further east on 18th Street, filming of ABC's pilot "Cupid" was underway. Cupid is an updated version of Rob Thomas' 1990s comedy and centers on Trevor (Bobby Cannavale) who thinks he is the Roman god of love.

The Queen is Back

The Queen is Back, and that was the opening number at Donna Summer's concert last night at Bethel Woods.

Elliot, Rick, Bobby and I had third row center seats for this once in a lifetime event, as Donna belted out tunes from her new album, Crayons, as well as the old time favorites we all know and love.

It was a rip roaring crowd as concert goers danced in their seats to On The Radio, MacArthur Park and the encore finale, Last Dance.
